Mackmyra Moment Tolv

Nyheten om Sveriges första 12 åriga whisky har nog inte gått någon whiskyintresserad entusiast obemärkt förbi.  Den 16 februari släpptes nämligen 1200 flaskor av Mackmyra Moment Tolv till försäljning på Systembolaget och är således den 21:a utgåvan i Mackmyras Momentserie.

Whisky från Mackmyra må ha mycket rykten och åsikter om sig varav en hel del är ris och inte ros… Men oavsett vad en tycker om whiskyn från detta destilleri så visst tusan är det spännande med en 12 årig svensk wirre!? Jag har själv provat på en del mackmyror, både privatfat och officiella släpp, där några har fallit mig i smaken mer än andra och några har inte alls gått hem hos mig. Men så är det oavsett vilket destilleri whiskyn kommer från, ibland blir det bra och ibland mindre bra… sen är ju smaken så individuell, vilket jag tycker den ska få vara.

En sak är ialla fall säker och det är att jag kommer fortsätta ha mitt öppna sinne och hålla en positiv inställning när jag provar whisky från Mackmyra. Därför kändes det väldigt roligt att jag i helgen fick chansen att prova på denna nya tolvåriga skapelse i samband med mitt besök på Destillat Stockholm. I Mackyras monter fanns under fredagen en halvfull flaska Mackmyra Moment Tolv och den gick nog åt med en rasande fart.

Mackmyra Moment Tolv kommer från några av de första faten som fick flytta in i Mackmyras lager i Bodås Gruva i södra Gästrikland, 50 meter under jord. Det handlar närmare bestämt om sex stycken first fill bourbonfat av amerikans vit ek och som tidigare, vid ett tillfälle, lagrat Jack Daniels. Dessa fat fylldes 2004 och nu i december- januari buteljerades totalt 1500 flaskor. Resultatet är en outspädd whisky som håller en alkoholvolym på 47 %.

Mina egna intryck är att whiskyn är ljus i färgen, nästan åt ljus sirap. Doften upplevde jag som mycket angenäm och intressant med söta fruktiga toner av honungsmelon och päron samt len och gräddig vaniljsås. Även i smaken känner jag av de söta päronen och jag menar då sådana riktigt mjuka, mogna och gröna konferenspäron. Rätt oljig i sin karaktär och en liten uns av något sötkryddigt och bittert som får mig att tänka på rönnbär. Med en liten stunds luftning kommer en fylligare och sötare vanilj fram såsom smuligt smarriga vaniljdrömmar. Även en hint av röd-vita polkagrisar, så som dem är när de är alldeles färska och goda. Känner också en träighet från ek men som jag skulle vilja beskriva som sågspån.

Min helupplevelse är att Mackmyra Moment Tolv är en trevlig ny bekantskap som jag skulle vilja lära känna ännu lite mer. Jag gillade verkligen doften direkt medan smaken behövde lite mer tid på sig då den utvecklades med lite luftning. Trots sina 12 år på fat så uppfattar jag den som rätt ung i sin karaktär, vilket jag inte hade förväntat mig. Men... alltid kul med överraskningar! :)

The news about Sweden's first 12-year-old whisky have probably not undergone any whisky enthusiast unnoticed. On the 16 of February the Mackmyra distillery released 1200 bottles of “Mackmyra Moment Twelve” to sale at Systembolaget, and it is the 21st edition of the Mackmyra Moment Serie.
Whisky from Mackmyra may have a lot of rumors and opinions about themselves ... But even if you like the whisky from this distillery or not, it is for sure really exciting with a 12 year old Swedish whisky! I have tried some Mackmyra before, both private casks and official releases, were some have been more fancy than others and some have not been my “cup of the”. But this is regardless of where the whisky comes from, sometimes it's good and sometimes it´s less good ... the taste is so individual and it have to be.
Anyway, one thing is for sure, and that is that I will continue to have my mind open and keep a positive attitude when I try whisky from Mackmyra. So it felt very nice for me when I had the opportunity last weekend to try out this new twelve-year-old creation during my visit at Distillates Stockholm. On Friday Mackmyra had a half-full bottle of Mackmyra Moment Twelve, and it was emptied in just a couple of hours I think.
Mackmyra Moment Twelve comes from some of the very first casks that moved into Mackmyra stock in Bodås Mine, 50 meters underground. The whisky, which was filled in 2004 has been matured in six first fill bourbon casks of American white oak, which for one time before stored whiskey from Jack Daniels. A total of 1500 bottles was bottled in December to January and the result is a neat whiskey that keeps an alcohol volume of 47 %.
My own impression is that the whisky is light in the color, almost as the color of light syrup. The smell I experienced as very pleasant and interesting with sweet fruity notes of honeydew melon and pears and smooth creamy custard. Also in the taste, I feel the sweet pears, and, I mean those really soft, ripe ones. The texture is quite oily and I also find notes of bitterness that makes me think about rowanberries. With a small moment in the air it will be a fuller, sweeter vanilla almost as those crumbly cakes called vanilla dreams. Also a hint of red and white candy canes, as they are when they are really fresh and new. I do also taste a woodiness as from oak but which I would describe as sawdust.
My total impression is that Mackmyra Moment Twelve is a nice new acquaintanceship that I would like to get to know a little bit more. I really loved the smell right away while the taste needed a little more time when it was developed with little aeration. Despite its 12 years in barrels as I perceive it as quite young in its character, which I had not expected. Fun with surprises!
